- I have been having these weird modem problems that are driving me
- nuts. A couple of people have suggested it is a hardware conflict, but
- win95 doesn't report any. My machine is a 486dx266 with 8MB
- RAM. Microsoft serial mouse on com1. Diamond Stealth 24 video
- card. The machine is 2+ years old.
-
-
- The symptoms:
-
- 1. Zoltrix 14.4 internal fax-modem (on com2, com2 on my io card is
- disabled) worked great under win3.1. I install win95, and I can do
- anything *once* (use a phone dialer, connect with ppp, use
- hyperterminal), then I must reboot to get it to talk to me again
- (win95 reports no response from modem). Also, it doesn't work with
- Microsoft Fax (hangs on "initializing modem") or any other fax program
- I have tried. Zoltrix says it has tested that exact modem and it works
- fine with win95. They say it must be a hardware conflict.
-
- 2. Any time I use add new hardware to add com2 or my modem, the mouse
- hangs when I finish installing and I have to reboot.
-
- 3. I tried a Multitech external 28.8 modem. Enabled my io card
- external com2 and removed the internal modem. Win95 saw the com port,
- but not the modem (it didn't detect any modem on com2 at all). A
- friend tried it on his machine and win95 saw the modem. My external
- com port has never been used, so it possibly could be faulty, but
- win95 did see and install the port itself.
-
- 4. I tried a USR Sportster 288 vi internal modem. Disabled the com2 on
- the io card. This one faxes and connects and disconnects
- beautifully. Every time I try to use ppp, it fails with either "could
- not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols" or "could not
- connect to server". I can see in the log that a connection is being
- established but the failure happens bringing ppp up. I can use
- dial-up-networking with this modem to dial up to work and connect with
- a single screen (the dun post-connect screen), but ppp always fails.
-
- USR suggested a clean install of win95, which I did (I wanted to
- repartition my hard-drive anyway). Now I have no autoexec.bat or
- config.sys. Same problems. A friend tried the modem in his machine
- with no problems. I have gone over my ppp config with my ISP screen by
- screen, and ppp works with my Zoltrix anyway. Possibly there is some
- combination of serial port and modem settings (speed/flow
- control/error control) that I haven't tried, but I did try speeds down
- to 19.2.
-
- ------
-
- I bought a new io card with a 16550 UART since my current one doesn't
- have one. I will try that with the external Multitech, but I haven't
- had a chance to install it yet.
-
-
- Any ideas? Any suggestions for how to figure out what this problem is?
- I was thinking of disabling the mouse by unplugging it and removing it
- from device manager and seeing what happens. Is this enough to disable
- it?
-
-
- Any help at all would be appreciated - please respond by email.
-
- Thanks!!!
